Free dating sites compared: what can you do without paying?
Almost every dating app is free to join, but very few let you do everything without paying. We compared what a non-paying member can do on eleven popular dating services — messages, likes and seeing who liked you — and how each of them makes money.

"Limited" means the service has a daily limit for free members but does not publish the number. The facts come from each service's official help pages, checked on 11 October 2026. Features can differ by country, and companies often test changes.
What "free" usually means on a dating site
Almost every dating app is free to download and free to join. The difference is what happens next. Most popular services use a freemium model: you can create a profile and browse, but the most useful features — seeing who liked you, unlimited likes, starting or reading some conversations — are part of a paid subscription or cost credits.
When you compare dating sites, ask four questions:
- Can you start a conversation without paying?
- Can you read and reply to every message without paying?
- Is there a daily limit on likes or swipes?
- How does the site make money — subscriptions, credits or advertising?
Site by site
Bridesa
Everything is free: profile and photos, search by country, age and gender, messages and live chat, favourites, friends, profile visitors and online games. You can write to any member without matching first, and there are no daily limits. Bridesa has no paid options and is funded by advertising. It works in 11 languages and has members from more than 130 countries. It is a younger, smaller community than the big apps, so a particular city may have only a few members. Tinder
The free version lets you match and chat, but only after a mutual match, and the number of likes is limited. Seeing who liked you is part of Tinder Gold and Platinum. Tinder also sells Super Likes and Boosts and shows ads to free members.
Bumble
Bumble works without paying: after a match, each person can send one opening message, and the match expires if nobody writes within 72 hours. In August 2026 Bumble dropped its rule that women must message first. Free members have a daily like allowance; seeing everyone who liked you is a Premium feature.
Hinge
Free members can send a limited number of likes each day, add a comment to a like and chat after a match. They see the people who liked them one at a time; subscribers (Hinge+ and HingeX) see all of them at once.
OkCupid
Messaging is free once both people like each other, and after you like someone you can send one intro message. Mutual likes are always visible for free, while the full list of people who liked you needs Premium. Free members see ads.
Plenty of Fish
Free members can search, like and message their mutual matches. Messages to people you have not matched with ("First Contacts") have a daily limit, and more can be bought. The full list of people interested in you is a Premium feature.
Badoo
You can chat for free with your matches. Starting a chat without a match costs credits, and likes stay blurred until you buy Premium. Badoo shows ads to free members.
Match.com
Free members can chat with all their matches and rate up to 50 profiles a day. Seeing who liked you needs a Silver subscription or higher. In New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Texas and Oklahoma free members can send one intro a day.
InternationalCupid
Free (Standard) members can read and reply only to messages from paying members — not to messages from other free members — and can start up to 3 new conversations a day. Paid plans unlock messaging with everyone.
Facebook Dating
Facebook Dating is part of the Facebook app and has no paid features. You chat after a match, and the people who liked you are shown for free. You need a Facebook account, and it is available only in some countries.
Mingle2
Mingle2 lets you message anyone for free, but the number of first messages to new people is capped. It also sells a MinglePlus subscription, coins and virtual items, and shows ads on the free plan.
How to choose
- You want the most people near you: the big apps (Tinder, Bumble, Hinge) have the most members in most cities. Their free versions are enough to match and chat, but expect daily limits.
- You want to talk to people abroad without paying: look for a site where messaging is free for everyone and you can search by country. Bridesa was made for exactly that.
- You want no paid features at all: Bridesa and Facebook Dating have none. Facebook Dating needs a Facebook account; Bridesa works with an email or Google account.
- Whatever you choose: never send money to someone you have only met online. Read our online dating safety guide.
How we compared
We are the team behind Bridesa, so we kept this comparison to facts that anyone can check. On 11 October 2026 we read each service's official help pages and app store listings and describe only what a non-paying member can do. We do not list prices: they change often and depend on your country and age. If something here is out of date, please tell us through the support page.
